The Viennese cultural activist Robert Müller (1887-1924) lapsed into obscurity following his suicide at a still-young age. In the past two decades his remarkable Expressionist works have slowly been rediscovered by German academics, but are still unknown in the English-speaking world. Alfred Döblin singled him out as ‘a dazzling wordsmith’. I am now translating his major work, the novel Tropics – The Myth of the Journey, and some of his shorter stories.
