Produced in exile just before the Second World War, Döblin’s South American epic The Land Without Death (a.k.a. The Amazonas Trilogy) languished unrecognised and misunderstood for decades. A 1960s edition even cut the third part of the trilogy entirely.
Now whole books are written in German about this great work and its meaning for present-day Europe. As in his ‘Chinese novel’ Wang Lun, Döblin presents here a non-Eurocentric perspective on humanity. We shall post substantial excerpts of the full text in translation, along with critical commentary.
