From the time he first became a significant figure on the Berlin literary scene, in around 1910, it was clear that Alfred Döblin had formed clear views on what constituted good and bad writing, and would not be swayed by cliquish opinion or ephemeral fashions. So when he goes out of his way to draw favourable attention to a contemporary, it is usually worthwhile looking into the matter.
