At last I’ve finished translating Doeblin’s great 17th century epic into English!

Rulers and rebels, prelates and posturers, courtiers and coiners, monks and mercenaries fill this teeming narrative, told with colourful cinematic verve.

When Doeblin wrote his novel, Europe’s other Great War was in full swing. A hundred years later, as we still live with the fallout from that ‘war to end all wars’, Wallenstein reminds us of the perennial inability of Europe’s elites to keep the peace.
