This translation (the first into English, and maybe into any language) appeared in the February 2015 print edition of The Brooklyn Rail, to coincide with the new edition of The Three Leaps of Wang Lung. It’s reposted here with the friendly encouragement of Jen Zoble and Donald Breckenridge at the Rail.
When Döblin published The Three Leaps of Wang Lun, his first great epic novel, he cut several passages from the manuscript. Four of these passages appeared later, without reference to the novel Wang Lun, as short stories or fragments in various places.
Here, for the first time, all four previously published outtakes are brought together.
